Dominican Self Hate

Not only does self hate loom in the African American culture in the US it also predominates in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic was inhabited by Christopher Columbus who brought with him many African slaves there to cultivate cotton, sugar cane and other natural goods. Unlike African Americans though the Dominican population was so heavily influenced by Spanish Imperialism in the Island of Hispaniola that most Dominican even charcoal black Dominicans today do not claim themselves as black. Imperialistic colonizers sought to convert the Taino populations of the DR as well as the African population into Christianity. Much of the culture was mixed therefore Dominicans today come in all different shades of Brown.

Dominican girls Luz Freiney Paulina, from left, Esther Celeste Santana, Mayelin Eloisa Valdez and Melisa Valdez, comprise the dance troupe Las Nizas. Below, Dominican author Manuel Nunez writes about the issues of 'black' and 'Dominican' as they relate to the history in his country. (Candace Barbot/Miami Herald)

Deeply rooted into the Dominican psyche was the concept of White is good Black is bad. Even though the White colonizers from Spain where the ones to destroy the original Taino tribal culture that existed there: enslaved them, tore families apart, and raped their women. When the Taino people could do no more shipped in ship loads of Africans to increase man labor and harvest crops. The Dominican population does not identify with Blackness. The Dominican population perceives Darker skin and other physically predominant Black features as bad, ugly, and lower class. About 90% of the Dominican population today has African ancestry. The DR is the only country in the entire world whose populations is mostly descendant from Africa yet fails to acknowledge its blackness.

Sensitive Nature of Black Self Definition in the DR. Society is Integrated but far from Color Blind.

So deeply brainwashed is the pop. of the DR that it is known for its predominant and flourishing hair salon businesses. Much like the African American women in the US Dominican women would do anything than to be caught dead wearing their natural "nappy hair."

It is normal for a Dominican females to relax their hair as early as 5 years old. This is a life long process that many do not grow out of. Even women who have "good" hair due to their prominent European descendancy relax their hair without needing to. The research and funding that goes into Dominican hair products (for black hair) is very extensive. Dominican hairstylists are even gaining wide popularity in the United States for being able to maintain healthy hair that ranges from slightly wavy to very coarse due to the many differences in backgrounds.

There is nothing wrong with maintaining healthy hair but many of the treatments that are recommended encourage damaging your hair's natural state. Dominican hairstylists are experts on converting natural curly and coarse hair into very straight sleek and shiny. There is nothing wrong with that once in a while but when will be the day when the DR accepts that it is fine to let your hair out. Instead of encouraging shiny sleek hair when will it be okay to encourage wearing your hair's natural curly state. When will it be okay in the Dominican Republic to encourage afro's, and cornrows. When will others stop looking down upon moreno's for their kinks or curly hair?

When will it be okay in the Dominican Republic to be BLACK? It has been so ingrained in Dominican culture that blackness is bad that many go as far as selecting a mate that does not have prominent black features. Those who have big noses, big lips, coarser hair, even less income. Those of prominent African roots are treated differently, even badly by the rest of the Dominican population and usually are in the lower part of the socioeconomic spectrum. This including racial slurs, and demeaning comments. Many dark Dominicans being excluded for the rest of their lives.

What will it take for this behavior and way of thinking to be transformed into one of greater acceptance? Why haven't black Dominicans in the DR revolted or spoke up for themselves? The only way to stop this is for darker skinned Dominicans to stand up for themselves as a whole, not try to assimilate themselves with the rest of the trigueno population. To let their voice be heard either through music, activism, or politics. They have to be forceful and confident. After so many years of Independence the DR still has a long way to go. A revolution must occur in the DR, but only if the
morenos have the courage to stand up for themselves carve their path and encourage acceptance of their African Roots.

The Miami Herald has done a 5 part series on The Voice of Afro-Americans: Covering The D.R., Cuba, Nicaragua, and Brazil.  Here's for more information on the Dominican Black Denial.

  1. Dominicans do not hate themselves because of the color of their skin. Pitch black, dark brown, light brown, morena, india, triguena, blaca, jaba, lo que sea. Dominicans don't go to bed thinking about the skin they are in. And when it comes to women and beauty it is a total different issue. White women do ware hair extensions, perm, color, or whatever it is. Ask Paris Hilton she knows. Not just that any women today will go as far as her budget permits to achieve her beauty goals. Slavery is bad everybody has suffered because of it. Whites were slaves before blacks. Read upon Persian and Moroccan history and find out this fact. We have to leave the pass behind and learn from the mistakes we've made so it won't happen again. Leonel Fernadez Reina is a moreno his wife too. Barak Obama is black his wife too. We are living in times that the race lines are being erased. Global warming and recycling is more of concern now. It is affecting EVERy body white, black, rich middle class, poor. Mother Nature does not care who you are or how you look like. Planet earth is dying and we must find a cure.

  2. Yeah that's true mother nature does not care what you look like but humans do. Dominicans DO discriminate against darker skinned Dominicans. Every Dominican who has very prominent black features has suffered from the discrimination by their own people. I know Dominican guys who have very prominent black features and very dark skin who have never even been able to get with a triguenita they only get play from african-american girls. As for leaving the past behind, that's easier said than done. Look at what is happening in Palestine they are arguing over who has ownership of the land based on the scriptures of the Old testament! Yes we are living in times where race lines are being erased but try to explain that to a Dominican in the DR. If that is the case then why is the Dominican Republic the only country in the world whose population is predominantly(90%) descended from Africa but does not acknowledge their blackness? Maybe some do here and there but most DEFINITELY DO NOT IDENTIFY WITH AFRICA. Most people in the world are not educated enough to see things from the perspective that you do and its a shame.
    Mother nature is dying and needs MANY cures but the psyche of brainwashed countries that were colonized by imperialists also needs curing. These issues exist not only in DR but also in SOuth America, and Africa. Slavery has not ended it still goes on today with human trafficking. As long as there is a way to feed off of people's insecurities, as long as there is poverty, as long as there is injustice, humans will always find a way to make money off of things. Even something as vital as saving the planet, ever heard of the global carbon cap?

  3. Bueno ya que me dieron miboche!!!!!! I would like to share with all of you one of my favorite books from the author Algernon Austin, "Achieving Blackness". The book discuss this issue not just the one related to Dominicans but also to decendants of blacks, non-black, and to Afrikaans living in the Mother Land that today are facing issues related to race, ethnics, and color. One of my favorite quotes that is found in the book is"

    "I've heard that most people in Kizimkazi-on the East African island of Zanzibar- claim to be Persian...To me the people look about as Persian as Mike Tyson"

    "When I was growing up, we used to say "If you are light you're alright if you're brown get down, if you are black get back." It's taken my people fifty years to move from Negro to Black to African American. I wonder how long it will take the Swahili to call themselves African." Henry Louis Gates,Jr.

  4. I happen to know many domincans and i do not agree that they misstreat the blacks or dark skined dominicans. I lived in many states and all i know about dominicans is they are very friendly people who enjoy music cookouts and are hard working,also very dedicaded to their children and they would never dream of putting their old folks in nursing homes like many of us do!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Thanks for writing! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Yes its true: friendly, enjoy music, cookouts, hardworking, very dedicated to children, never putting old folks in homes lol...

    No they do not mistreat. That's the wrong word.
    Its indirect: indirect comments, facial expressions,connotations of BEAUTY. White features are more beautiful than black features. How many of those you know would date a African American over a Dominican. How many of those you know would date or marry a dark skinned Dominican who looks straight up black over a light skinned Dominican with "good" Hair,and white features?
    Its not in your face racism or discrimination, its deeply rooted and indirect. Dominican Republic is the only country in the entire world who's population is 90% descended from Africa AND who denies their African roots in indirect ways such as going to great lengths to straighten their hair. (that only being one example)They are known for having the biggest and most popular market for techniques and products to straighten hair and to deal with "BLACK" hair. Its the same concept behind the skin lightening creams used in Africa. Also the same concept behind the operations that Asian women get to widen their eyes to look more European. Its all very indirect and subconscious. The pressure to be white.
    Its buried deep in their unconscious. Its an after effect of British imperialism.

    It does not only occur in DR it also occurs in Brazil, NIcaragua, Cuba and even amongst African Americans. Light skinned black girls with whiter features are viewed as more beautiful. For example Tyra Banks and Beyonce. Thats why its was such a surprise when Queen Latifah was a spokesperson and MOdel for Covergirl! She's not what you typically think of when you think African American model modeling for the corporate world.

    Its all things that people think but dont say. Its indirect.

  6. I have had the opportunity to travel extensively throught Latin America and the Caribbean. From Mexico to Argentina. Guadeloupe to Grenada in the west indies. My worst travel experience by far has been the DR. Its people not only lack racial identity, but discriminating against Haitians is a common ocurrence. Years of Trujullo's brutal dictadorship resulted in a country that lacks ethnic identity and has sown the seeds for a system based on corruption and lazyness. Where most of the labor is done by Haitians and yet, even those Haitians born are raised in the DR are not considered Dominicans and where cases of modern day slavery abund. Though indegenous communities were extinct as far back as the 1500's, black Dominicanas insist on having indegenous roots, though their racial features clearly show they are in fact of African descent. A country whose people are ashamed of who they are and where they come from, will without doubt create a dysfunctional society brewing with racism and corruption.

  7. You know what? MMR is so right. It is indirect. I'm Dominican, so I would know. We don't really hate African Americans, we just think white people are somehow better, especially when it comes to physical description. But that doesn't mean we're all like that-I'm certainly not. Doesn't matter that I may be that rare 10% of Dominicans that isn't African-no, it's not because I don't like black people, but it's because of the undeniable white-like traits I have,(golden/light brown hair, green eyes. And pretty much the first time everyone sees me they think I'm white, so i don't doubt that I may be from Spaniard descent.) I have many friends who are black and I don't mind. Some of us have moved on from that very much unwanted racism, because truth be told, we're very caring, loving, hard-working people. And really, it shames me to think that people haven't gotten over the slavery/racist crap but, alas, that's life. Even sadder than that is that we won't leave behind the hate and take the matter of all the more important problems into our hands. Things better change. Big time.

  8. The Dominican Republic is an Island known for having alot of Self-Hating Black People.....It's Embarrassing to Watch an Obvious Black Person from the Dominican Republic (or any country for that matter) jump on the Bandwagon of White Supremacy Against other Black Dominicans. How can you be racist against Black People when You are Black Yourself. You DON'T have to be 100% Pure African to be Black. The descendents of Enslaved Africans in Any Country were Raped so much by Europeans that Of Course We Are Not 100% pure African.....But We are Still Black. Stop the Nonsense! My God You have to Be Truly Brainwashed and Literally traumitized by the cruelty and Descrimination Done By Europeans to wake up every day literally hating and denying what you are. SNAP OUT OF IT DAMN IT! European, White People Enlsaved West Africans and Oppressed them to Hide the fact that they were Actually Jealous of the same Africans that They Enslaved. Our Physical Beauty, Our God Given Talent and Unique way of life, our Birth Right, History and Conncetion to God is what European Enslavers have tried to steal and we make it easy for them when we are ashamed of being the Beautiful Black people that we are. Now Europeans have lied to us and Convinced us that something is wrong with being Black when Something is Very Right with Being Descendents of West African People that were actually God's Chosen Children. We are now fighting among Ourselves and Deny who we are.....It's Got To Stop!!! Black Dominicans are perhaps the MOST Brainwashed and Emotionally Scarred by European Oppression than all of the Black people who were Enslaved in any of the Western World. It's like a rape victim who can't stand to admit that being raped was NOT their fault. Everyone, including White People(including Spaniards from Spain)are confused by Dominicans and other Black people who are Obviously Black and try to "Pass" as Indian or "Tan" when Everyone can see the Predominant African Ancestory when they look at them. We can see what you are. The Dominican Republic is at least 80% BLACK NOT Tan and Not Indian. Indian and Tan is simply considered to be a step closer to being White on the Racist Hierarchy that was created by Europeans long ago to make themselves feel superior. In our world it is considered better to be Anything But Black. You Don't have to be 100% Pure African to Be Black. You know when most of your family is Black no matter what country you come from. Spaniards, English, Portuguese, French, Scotch-Irish and other European People Don't have a problem recognizing who is really Black because they have been able to easily move on from the days of slavery because their ancestors have passed down a better life to them off the Backs of the Black People they oppressed. Descendents of Enslaved Africans ALL came from the EXACT SAME TRIBES IN WEST AFRICA...There is NO Difference Between us! We were just broken up while we were in Africa and Distributed throughout Canada, the U.S., South America, Central America and the Carribean. We now speak the languages of the European people that oppressed us centuries ago. We need to find each other, Be proud of Being Black and reconnect with each other. If the descendents of Enslaved Africans from all countries came together, Do you know how much Power, Pride and Wealth We Would Have? It's time for us to stop being weak and stand up for who we are. Our Self Hatred is why the descendents of Enslaved West Africans are struggling so badly in the Americas today. People of all races are Attracted to other people who are not afraid to be themselves. Don't follow the trend...set it!

  10. The main thing to take into account is that 1. There were no civil rights group formed in La R.D. to tackle racism & segregation. 2. The One-Drop Rule (which is no longer in law here in the U.S. but still heavily embedded in the minds of Americans nonetheless) was pretty much non-existent in La R.D. as well. 3. Race is a social, man-made construct in order to continue the conquer & divide & also to make sure global society knows who is on top, who is on bottom & who is in-between. Mulattos/mixed Dominicans are just that, mixed. As are most African-Americans in the states. The difference is one wants to force a racial identifier on the other because of various historical & social reasons. The other just wants to represent their nationality & culture (which most Dominicans do not deny have African influence). When Dominicans come to America & almost immediately people are trying to tell them what to call themselves, that can result in an entirely different reaction. 'Black' when coming here equates as African-American to a great number of Afro-Latinos. Hell, besides some 2nd gen & most 3rd gens already assimilated, most want to be identified with their nationality anyway, not even wanting to be called "Latino" or "Hispanic". Also, people are throwing out statistics here without any sources or links posted. 80%? 90%? Can you back these statements up please. And not with Wikipedia. Lol.

  12. D.R. is the result of deception that is imposed on nonwhite victims of Racism White Supremacy across the globe. There is no where on this planet where whites have set foot where one cannot see similar symptoms of white supremacy. D.R,. is a convenient scapegoat but anywhere you go on the planet the lighter you are the better you are treated. If you are lucky enough to be "white" then you will not be mistreated on the basis of color. What is the solution? It's not pointing the finger at other victims of white supremacy. No it will require replacing the system of Racism White Supremacy with a system of justice. For more information on countering racism white supremacy I would suggest a google search on Neely Fuller who said "If you do not understand White Supremacy (Racism) – what it is, and how it works – everything else that you understand, will only confuse you.”

  13. It always cracks me up when I read these comments about Dominican self hatred. We are one of the most racially integrated countries in the world with people intermarrying for generations. As long as i've been living in the States it's been so rare to actually see people have genuine friendships and relationships with people outside of their group. I've even heard many people say, both white and black, that they distrust the other group and could not have a friendship. What the hell is that! Everybody is a ______-American. They think they have more in common with somebody in another continent than their neighbor across the street. Ridiculous! Here's a shocker for you, white is considered best across the entire world! All these African Americans wearing 100% rehmy indian princess weaves and dying their "natural" hair platinum blonde. Or obsessing about European clothing labels. Please. Let me tell you some things Dominicans in the D.R. don't do:
    Call each other the N-word
    Have music where our women are degraded and called b*** and h*** in the song
    Deny that we are interracial and claim full African ancestry
    Plan a trip to "The Motherland" but really go to South Africa because it's more developed. Instead of West African underdeveloped countries
    Talk about how "The Man" is out to keep us down for all the problems in life
    and what's up with all this anger like somebody just took the shackles off your feet yesterday? African Americans are the most angry people I have ever encountered in my life.

    African Americans really need to start focusing on their own issues instead of trying to spread their own version of racial colonization across Latin America. At the end of the day, every single immigrant groups comes into this country and outperforms you in every statistic. Even Africans come here and open up businesses right away and demand the best from their kids at school.

    59% Mulatos / Mestizos = Mixes
    12% Black
    2% Asian/Others

    According to recent genealogical tests the average Dominican Mixture is estimated to be:
    58.1 % European/Caucasian
    35.2% Black
    6.4% Native lndian

  15. Of course African Americans have their issues, as does any group that has been subjected to Racism White Supremacy, and that's pretty much every single people of color on the globe. There are videos on YouTube of indigenous Mexicans saying they are white people - it is sheer lunacy!! The scientific racism created and promoted by white people in order to make themselves (the global minority) superior, has done a lot of long lasting EVIL whose repercussions are still not finished being borne out.

    As a Dominican raised in the US among Hispanics, then a couple years among blacks, and in the latter part of my life among whites, and as a person who is at least partly conscious and well read, I have to agree 100 PERCENT with this post. Dominicans are OBSESSED with "mejorando la raza" (literally a tenet of European/white eugenics), having kids that are lighter than they are, "better" hair, more "fino" (refined, aquiline nose), etc. that it is quite literally SICKENING. I don't care what anyone says, I have heard it ALL MY LIFE from family, friends, casual acquaintances, teachers, EVERYONE. We may not have the variety of racism that existed in the US where the lines are decidedly drawn and you're over there, I'm over here, but it is the kind of familiar type racism/ABUSE that still hurts, denigrates and oppresses. The Iberians amalgamated a lot more with the African population but they were racist nevertheless and many black and brown Dominicans have inherited their behaviors not realizing they are effectively FIGHTING AGAINST THEMSELVES!!! It's SHOCKING, the ignorance that exists there. Dominicans make the SLIGHTEST distinctions based on phenotype along. A person can have slightly tighter curls and be called Moreno as opposed to Indio or whatever. It's sheer LUNACY. At the end of the day Dominicans look like a group of North Africans, Ethiopians, Cape Verdeans, and African Americans and that TO ME, is pretty black. The culture is also mostly African but we are under the DELUSION that it is very Euro. And who enriched the degenerate white Spaniards for 700 years but Arab, Moroccan, Senegalese and Malian Moors????? The Spaniards would have been as lame, bland and boring as their Northern European counterparts were it not for their constant contact, over millennia with Africans and Arabs. Dominicans have ALOT to learn. I STAY embarrassed at my people. I cringe when I hear them talk history and mention the taino but omit the Africans. It's a giant FACEPALM. I don't know if we'll ever learn...I don't know.

    The way I see it is: if you have appreciable/obvious African blood then you are Afro Latino, for the most part. That means there are TONS of afro latinos in DR, the bulk of us are that. We have A LOT to learn.

    black self hate is a result of other BLACKS having the syndrome of thinking white is better & hating them for being black..

  17. In the Last 2010 United States Census Dominican marked themselves as follow...

    59% Other(Mixes)
    29% White
    12% Black
    As we see, no a SINGLE one identify himself as "indio" as many Anti-Dominicans haters wanna claim. 57% of Dominicans in the US were born in the D.R. & the rest first & second generation.

    According to C.I.A. Fact Book estimates Dominicans are:
    73% Mix Tri-racial(Spanish ,Afro ,Native)
    16% White( Spanish/Other European)
    11% Black

    According to recent genealogical tests by DNA-Tribe the average Dominican is estimated to be:
    58.1 % Spanish European
    35.2% African
    6.4% Taino Indio

    http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp323/cristiano3/DNA-4.jpg

    According 23andMe the average Mix Dominican is estimated to be
    60% European
    30% African
    5% Taino Indian

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?authkey=CL2T54EF&hl=en_US&key=0At1sp4m_NTCLdHB4a2FZYXRxZnh0UzRfbzlTV2lXSWc&type=view&gid=0&f=true&sortcolid=-1&sortasc=true&rowsperpage=250

    Which mean Dominicans are Mostly of European/Spaniard descendants and Factually of Indio Native descent.

    Dominicans have been the front line of Black American attack against Latinos, its weird how no body attack & bully PRican as much as Dominicans even though both are Mix of 3 races & the irony of this is that PR claim to be 75% "white" while the majority Dominicans identity themselves as Mix race ppl according to our history book & how ppl actually arent stupid not to go to school, university, we are the 9th largest economy in L.A. everyone own a smartphone, have internet, we all use youtube, facebook, we are NOT a the Spanish version of Haiti, its easy to write crap about Dominicans & how ignoran we are supposedly are but its bcs we share our border with the blackest & poorest nation in the Americas, so ppl assume we are just poor & backward as Haiti, this is fat from true.
    The word "negro" & "moreno"(dark skin) are in fact use as an endearment word in the Dominican culture.

    Dominicans are a new scapegoats of Black American Inferiority Complex Issues, Jealousy, Lack of self Pride & Self Hate Black American which are very know as a bunch self haters who want to be closet to their White American counterparts as possible by wearing Caucasian weaves & trying theur best to mix with White ppl.

    Dominicans are one of the most PROUD & ARROGANT people u will ever meet, we were consider the 2 most happy people in the planet in 2009. Our culture influence is all over Latin America & the world...

    Dominicans SKIN Color descriptions in other words, Indio dont mean ppl think they are Indians but its use as skin color descriptions
    Rubio = White(Color Eyes & Hair)
    Rubito = White
    Blanquito = Light skin Mixes
    Indiesito(Indio) = Brown Skin Mixes
    Morenito = Dark Skin Mixes
    Moreno = Black
    Prieto = Dark Black(usually for Haitians)
